Our Philosophy
All humans are unique, and learn in diverse styles and collaborative ways. Like Race (2013), a blended and innovative 'mixed' approach to teaching works best in my experience - from instructional to experiential. Mixing online, face to face, collaborative, self-directed study, peer-centred and much more. I always try to encourage active learning experiences and evaluate, reflect and learn from what works best , as well as what turns out crud .
As I now specialise in teaching learning technologies, I am an advocate of the emerging engagement learning model where tech can facilitate student engagement in ways which are difficult to achieve otherwise (O'Brien & Toms 2008) .
I like to be creative, a role model, mentor, buddy, pioneer, co-collaborator and facilitator of learning in these challenging times of ubiquitous computing (Weiser 1993), globalisation of the HE market and rapid social changes, economic trends and rising learner expectations.
I am aware of surface learners, and that deeper learning is neither value free or effortless (Biggs & Tang 2011) . To sum up my philosophy, a famous Confucius quote really resonates with me:
“Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous.”―Confucius, The Confucian Analects [Online 2015]
